From the Cemeti Art Foundation’s BIMONTHLY DISCUSSION ON ART III:
To Nano Warsono, art criticism should side with the interests of the public. Moreover, it should also begin to take an emancipatory position: motivating change, bringing up counter-culture, encouraging change on a practical level. He sees that as found today any writing on art is "stereotypically" taken as "art criticism", and this has blurred the different notions of critic, curator, and appreciator, writer on art, journalist, and art historian. Art criticism is still regarded as a means to mediate works to the public. He also considers the likeliness of art criticism to even manipulate things in relation with the public. At the same time, a critic may also turn to be a legitimizing agent regarding the quality of works. He believes it is appropriate for a critic as an "art communicator" to have his/her own stance regarding developments in art. At this point he offers emancipatory criticism that comprises the analysis and the judgment of works based on rational arguments. Furthermore, he makes an appeal, to critics in particular, to explain negative and positive aspects (of works being criticized) that may influence the public.
