Dede Sunyata was born in Bandung in 1956. He is a self-styled street artist whose realism and eye for traditional subjects harmonize well with the tastes of those who prefer uncomplicated yet genuine traditional Javanese art. 

Though he has no formal education in art, and yet has a talent for imbuing his work with the spirit of place and character. In the early 80's he spent two years on Bali as a bohemian artist and participated in several group exhibitions with Balinese painters.

In keeping with being a "street artist," he is regularly commissioned to do large-format outdoor works for commercial purposes. Among these was a huge "balihoo" to promote Ciamis and Tasikmalaya (West Java) as tourist areas.

More recently Dede was commissioned to paint a large format, realistic painting for an installation by Tisna Sanjaya (a Bandung artist) which was to travel to Australia in 2000.
