Arie Dyanto makes neon boxes inspired by advertisement light boxes. Taking his ideas from the public arena, he also prefers to see his works displayed in these areas, where people are passing by. It is difficult to get permanent sites for his ’screaming images’ and although being restricted by commission, he did manage to make an interesting signboard for a vegetarian restaurant. Arie Dyanto’s works are balancing between fine art and design, between art for exhibitions in art spaces (printmaking and neon boxes) and art in the public realm (neon boxes, posters and T-shirts).

Arie can probably be described as the ‘rocker of the band’. Easily amusingly ironic in his words and seemingly detached, he is indeed a rebel of the most romantic type whose cause finds its roots in his innermost being. His rebellion isn’t directed so much against society itself than its archetypes. Figures are often enigmatic and masked, symbols of a very personal question. The approach remains very graphic with strong cut out silhouettes. The use of plexi-glass and neon lights defines him as the most ‘modern’. However, despite the appearances, his rebellion is almost ageless.

Arie Dyanto has exhibited his work in Yogyakarta at Geleran Gallery, the French Cultural Center, Museum Beteng Vredeburg, and internationally in Germany, Australia, Japan and the Netherlands. In addition, Arie has published the comic books: Game, Komik Anjing, The Messager, The Hype, and Fuga.
